Colposcopy is done in the office without anesthesia. Through the colposcope the cervix and vagina are observed under magnification, applying reactive solutions that highlight cell areas with suspicious changes.
If an abnormal area is identified, a directed biopsy is taken for histopathology. The study lasts 15 to 25 minutes and most patients return to their routine the same day.
Indicated when the Pap test reports atypia, in persistent high-risk HPV infection, intermenstrual or post-coital bleeding, visible cervical or vaginal lesions, and for follow-up of prior treatments for dysplasia.
It is also part of the integral workup in patients with a family history of gynecologic cancer or to confirm cure after a conservative procedure.
Visual findings are discussed at the end of the colposcopy. If a biopsy was taken, the histopathology report is available in 7 to 10 business days, and we schedule a follow-up to define next steps.
